Trailer Of The Week - Week #37 - Konga

With the original film reaching its 80th birthday this year, Ben has set out on a journey to a land that time forgot, watching all of the King Kong films along the way.

Not a film about a long line of people drunkenly dancing at the end of a party, but British cinema’s 1961 answer to (read: rip-off of) King Kong. The promotional material for Konga makes no secret of this, clearly attempting to cash in on the original giant gorilla’s fame by bandying his name about not only in the trailer but also on the poster. The sixties trailer now functions as both an absolute gem of classic low-budget film promotion and a warning for anyone actually considering watching Konga - the ape suit here makes Guillermin’s 1976 King Kong remake look like a nature documentary. Look out too for the late Michael Gough, most well-known as Alfred Pennyworth in the Burton/Schumacher Batman films, hamming it up as the “madman” who creates Konga.
