The Hustler came out on Blu-ray recently and if you've never seen Robert Rossen's 1961 classic then there can be few better times to organise checking it out. Trailers weren't quite as slick as they are now back in the sixties but the preview for The Hustler isn't as bad as some others on offer from the decade. Some hand-drawn stills start it off before introducing some of the film's major tropes; hidden pasts, obsession, adversity and the good ol' thrill of the hustle. There's much more to The Hustler though than its overtures towards the effects bad living has on people's lives. Paul Newman is incredible, Jackie Gleason a believable and dangerous foe, Piper Laurie a fascinating femme fatale. A true classic and one that only gets better with each watch.
